This Ariane et Barbe-Bleu is a 2011 production from the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, directed by the great Claus Guth, with a psychoanalytic and claustrophobic cut. He’s one the most interesting and stimulating director of modern opera theatre. The symbolist story of Ariane becomes a sort of a path in the labyrinths of the mind, almost a thriller for the soul. On the podium, conducting Dukas’ music, Stèphane Denève, while interpreting Barbe-Bleu, we find a great singer such as José van Dam, a veteran of the stage, and the intense Jeanne-Michèle Charbonnet, interpreting the undoubtedly draining role of the protagonist.
